Evaluating the Application of a Gap‐Fill Exercise on the Learning of Phrasal Verbs: Do Errors Help or Hinder Learning?

In recent years, there has been considerable interest in how to maximize learners' retention of multiword expressions. One technique that shown be highly effective is the use exercises such as those found mainstream English a second language textbooks. present study, we investigated execution gap-fill exercise impacts learning phrasal verbs with 118 learners studying foreign language. Participants completed by referring answer key, or they received key only after completing exercise. The effects conditions were assessed tests for measuring productive and receptive knowledge at two intervals. results from mixed-effects logistic regression modeling showed both executions led similar rates retention. findings largely challenge previous research. We also explored minimize proactive interference when participants make errors asking them recollect their initial guesses during posttests. guess was produced, correct recall target much greater than not recollected. finding indicates memory may play vital role learn errors. pedagogical implications are discussed, future areas research proposed.
